in which everyone gets an A for effort

Today I got a haircut, a seemingly mundane task, but a larger undertaking for me. In fact, it really was a group effort. In order to get a pretty decent haircut for a fabulously affordable price, I usually go to this Aveda Institute in the city. I've always had a great experience. Today, I'll say, my haircut isn't necessarily bad, but it was a lacklustre experience.

First, my mom came to go with me. We drove into the city, found street parking, fed the meter (allowing over an hour!), and went in. Marlowe seemed pretty happy. So I told the girl what I want, and we proceeded. M started screaming. I took a quick break to nurse him, and then hopped back on my stool. And hte girl was like "so is this pretty much how you want it?" She had cut about a millimeter off of my rag mop. My specific instructions were I want it super short, close to my head. And so the haircut went, my repeating what I wanted over and over and over and over again. Even pointing out people walking through the room whose hair I wanted. It took over an HOUR for her to cut my stinkin' hair. I have short hair. I have easy hair. I wanted an easy haircut. So I was pretty annoyed that I got an okay haircut after much discussion. But, whatever, you get what you pay for.

This extraordinarily long haircut meant that I was extraordinarily late getting home to meet Ellis coming home from school. Thankfully, work at home daddy didn't mind, and E was obliging, so he didn't lose too much work time, either.

When we pulled up, I popped E into the car and we went to IKEA, where we spent somewhere between 2-3 hours. I got an Antilop for Marlowe. He's so cute.

I have a headache. Just watched the season premiere of House, which is currently my favorite show.

So that was my day.

Oh, I hate it when stylists don't understand what you're asking for. I've had haircuts where I've wondered if I haven't just had a minor stroke that's left me unable to communicate with other human beings. So I'm sorry yours was so annoying!

I think I've been to that same Aveda Institute. Was it the one in University City?

Dawn Braun:

so, where's the pic of your new doo? I haven't had much luck with Aveda salons in the past.

austina:

I LOVE House. It is also one of my favorite shows. David introduced it to me!

rylee95:

I can't imagine spending an hour cutting hairs on your head and being left with any in the end. Wow. What a bad experience. Your entire day exhausts me. You continue to be my Mommy Hero. :)

And, sadly, I missed House. I thought it was on at 9. It was not. Between 8 and 9 I was wrestling three crazy children to bed solo. Maybe next week. It's my favorite too.

jonesey:

Bummer for you about the hair cut...I'm bummed I missed house!

diber:

Wow, well it was a really good episode of House. Worth catching online next week.

Yes, it was the Aveda in Univ City. And normally, my experience is great. But it's an institute, so it's a gamble every time.

Karen Monahan:

Yes, House is my favorite too, because it's just really the best show on tv right now. That was an amazing first episode too.

Erica:

Sounds like she was worried that you'd freak out if she cut it too short-- maybe she's had that happen before-- but seriously, an hour? Oh well. Glad the rest of the day turned out well. =)

diber:

Yea, I thought of that. At the same time, though, I told her specifically "don't worry about going too short. I'd rather have too short than too long." All said though, I think she didn't have the experience yet to really put into practice what i was telling her. She got a lot of help from the instructor. That's okay, though. I don't mind being part of educational experiment. ha!

TG:

Ugh. Ugh, ugh.

The last girl I've gone to (twice) has done something similar. Take off more than a frikkin' millimeter! I won't be back for at least 3 months and I don't want to look like a shaggy dog next week!

I got my hair colored at a school a few weeks ago. My SIL is studying there, and I'm willing to be her practice help. (Though, the years when she was a teen and I was h/sing her. . . Well. . . they weren't her favorite years and I wasn't her favorite person, so if my hair ends up like frankenstein's bride I have no one to blame but myself. *L*)

TG:

Btw, House is sooooo good. But so painful to watch. Hubby's banned it from our repertoire right now, as his medical issues are still unresolved and we haven't yet met our own personal House to make a good dx.

mark wont:

what a nice post! thank you.
